Indian company develops new vegan leather from tomato peel

Indian company Bioleather, which specializes in the development of new fabrics, has released a new vegan leather made from tomato peel, FreshPlaza reports.

Bioleather represents a new material as an alternative to traditional animal leather. It is fully biodegradable and contains no plastic or chemicals that can harm people or the environment.

Bio-leather derived from tomatoes is an innovative material that can help solve the environmental problems associated with animal leather production.

In 2019, Bioleather launched its first product, Original Bioleather, a durable and comfortable fabric made from microbes. The production of such material requires only a small amount of land, water and energy compared to the production of traditional animal leather.

“Animal leather production is responsible for at least 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions and consumes 25% of the world’s fresh water.”
Bioleather management
To produce the new material based on tomato peel, Bioleather uses a patented process that begins with the extraction of the main component, lycopene, from the tomato peel.

It is then combined with other plant-based materials such as cotton, organic matter from tomato and biopolymer to create a flexible, durable and environmentally friendly material. According to Bioleather, such bio-leather can be used in a variety of industries, including clothing, footwear, and accessories.
