Ash from the Merapi volcano, which began erupting on the island of Java, has risen to a height of 3 km above the top of the volcano, said Hendry Gunawan, head of the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geohazard Mitigation.
No damage or casualties were reported after the eruption at 14:54 local time.
“The ash column was observed in gray color with high intensity, tilting to the east. The eruption is still ongoing,” Gunawan said in a statement.
