iPhone Users in EU Can Now Set Google Maps as Default Navigation App
A significant update for iPhone users in the European Union now allows setting Google Maps as the default navigation app. This innovation is part of Apple’s major changes to comply with the Digital Markets Act requirements and provides users with more freedom in choosing their preferred services.
New Navigation Options for European iPhone Users
iPhone users in the European Union have received the ability to set Google Maps as their default navigation app instead of Apple Maps. According to the German technology portal Macerkopf, thanks to the new Google Maps update, it can now be set as the default navigation app on iPhone.
This feature will become available with the iOS 18.4 update, expected to release in the coming days. After installing the update, all address links from web pages will automatically open in Google Maps instead of Apple Maps.
How to set Google Maps as the default navigator:
- Make sure you have the latest version of Google Maps installed from the App Store
- Go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps
- Select Google Maps as the default app for navigation
This update is part of Apple’s extensive changes to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) requirements in the European Union. Previously, the company had already allowed users to change default apps for email, web browser, and messaging. In particular, WhatsApp also received the ability to become the default app for calls and messages on iPhone.
According to Reuters, by implementing these changes, Apple may avoid potential financial sanctions from the EU regarding browser choice restrictions on iPhone. The European Commission, which launched an investigation last March under the DMA, plans to complete it next week.
The iOS 18.4 update demonstrates Apple’s willingness to adapt to European market requirements and provide users with more freedom in choosing default apps. This is an important step towards a more open iOS ecosystem, which could influence future changes in other regions of the world.
