ISW tells who was involved in the sinking of the Russian corvette Tarantula in Crimea

Ukrainian strikes on the temporarily occupied Crimea in late December 2023 sank a Russian Tarantula corvette.

This was reported analysts of the Institute for the Study of War in their daily report for January 18.

“Ukrainian guerrillas and satellite images confirmed that Ukrainian strikes on the occupied Crimea in late December 2023 sank a Russian Tarantula corvette near Sevastopol,” the statement said.

On January 18, the Atesh guerrilla movement reported the discovery of a sunken Tarantula corvette in Sevastopol’s Grafsky Bay. According to satellite data provided by the guerrillas, the ship sank between December 28 and 31, 2023.

According to the statements of the Russian and occupation authorities of Crimea, on December 29 and 30, 2023, the Russian military allegedly repelled Ukrainian air and sea drone strikes on Sevastopol.

“This confirmation of a previously unknown successful Ukrainian strike indicates that Ukraine’s recent strike campaign against occupied Crimea may have been more successful than open sources have confirmed,” ISW analysts said.

The Institute for the Study of War added that in the summer of 2023, the Ukrainian military launched a successful attack on the Russian Black Sea Fleet, forcing the occupiers to withdraw their ships from the main base in Sevastopol.

The Atesh guerrillas told that the Tarantula patrol ship, which sank in Sevastopol, was stolen by Russians in 2014. This vessel was actively used by the enemy for military purposes.

“It was a difficult fate for the ship, and we hope it will end there,” the underground said.

As a reminder, on January 18, the Ukrainian underground announced the discovery of a sunken border guard the Tarantula, a Project 205P patrol ship in Sevastopol. According to the guerrillas, the vessel could have been shot down during an attack by naval UAVs on Russian military targets several weeks ago.
