Japan has reacted to Russia’s withdrawal from talks on the Kuril Islands

The Japanese authorities reacted sharply to Russia’s withdrawal from negotiations on a peace treaty and the freezing of joint economic projects related to the disputed Kuril Islands.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called Russia’s decision “unfair” and “absolutely unacceptable,” CNN reports.

Note that the Russian Federation did this because of the sanctions imposed by Tokyo in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“This whole situation was created by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Russia’s reaction to push this towards Japanese-Russian relations is extremely unfair and completely unacceptable,” he said.

“Japan must resolutely continue sanctions against Russia in cooperation with the rest of the world,” Kishida added. He added that Japan has started accepting evacuees from Ukraine, and called on the public to support them.
