Kim Jong-un personally tested the launch of a strategic cruise missile from a submarine
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un supervised the testing of new cruise missiles designed to be launched from submarines. He also considered the possibility of building a nuclear submarine, while reaffirming his goal of creating a nuclear-armed navy.
This was reported by the Associated Press with reference to the DPRK state media.
It is noted that Kim Jong-un led the test launch along with other senior officials, stating that “the missiles flew 7,421 and 7,445 meters over the East Sea and hit the island target.”
The North Korean leader also said he was pleased with the test, calling it “strategically important” for the implementation of the “army modernization plan, which aims to create a powerful navy.”
“North Korea’s official newspaper Rodong Sinmun published photos of at least two missiles fired separately. Both created grayish-white clouds over the water’s surface when they were launched and soared into the air at an angle of about 45 degrees, likely indicating they were fired from torpedo launch tubes,” the AP report said.
According to the DPRK state media, these were Pulhwasal-3-31 missiles, a new type of weapon first tested last week during land launches from North Korea’s west coast.
