Lithuania to transfer NASAMS air defense systems to Ukraine
The Ukrainian Defense Forces will soon receive a new batch of medium-range NASAMS launchers. The donor will be Lithuania.
The Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Lithuania has announced a new military aid package that includes NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems. A US-Norwegian air defense system will be delivered to Ukraine along with guns to suppress drones. The number of launchers is not specified.
NASAMS is a medium-range system that uses AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles. It is aimed at intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles, airplanes, helicopters, and cruise missiles. The air defense missile system, like the German IRIS-T SLM, can shoot down air threats at an altitude of up to 20 km within a radius of 40 km.
The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense also described the weapons that have been transferred to Ukraine since the beginning of 2023. Previous military aid packages have included Mi-8 helicopters, Bofors L70 anti-aircraft guns, ammunition and M113 armored personnel carriers.
