Mack developed its version of a military truck for the US Army
Mack Defense has been awarded a contract to build a prototype for testing in the US Army’s Common Tactical Truck (CTT) program.
Mack Defense has been awarded a contract to design, manufacture and supply trucks for the prototype and test phase of the US Army’s Common Tactical Truck (CTT) program. Prototypes will be tested and evaluated to determine the final requirements for the next generation of trucks to eventually begin the modernization and replacement of the Army’s fleet of approximately 35,000 heavy tactical trucks that perform a wide range of logistics, support and maintenance combat missions.
The US Army’s requirements for the CTT program dictate a modern, scalable commercial platform with advanced safety technologies, enhanced off-road mobility, improved cybersecurity, open system architecture, improved fuel efficiency, and a commonality of different truck variants to promote greater sustainability.
‘We were confident in our ability to meet the needs outlined by the US Army when we submitted our initial application,’ said David Hartzell, president of Mack Defense. ‘Being selected for the prototype phase of this program confirms that the Army recognizes that Mack Defense has the expertise to adapt our commercial products, technologies and global value chain necessary to meet the rigorous requirements set forth for CTT.’
Mack Defense will deliver three prototype vehicles to the US Army by January 2024 for Army testing in a variety of situations to evaluate the vehicles’ performance, performance and durability.
According to Jack Terefinko, CTT program manager at Mack Defense, ‘The vehicles include an on-road tractor, an off-road tractor and a Load Handling System (LHS) truck, each based on our commercial vehicle platforms and modified technologies.’
After evaluation and testing of the prototype is completed in 2025, the Army is expected to launch a separate competition that will lead to a production contract to modernize the fleet of heavy tactical vehicles. The Army said the initial production contract could be more than 7,000 trucks worth more than $5.1 billion.
