The hydrogen truck is being developed with scientists from Oregon State University. An additional 25.8 million dollars was allocated for the project.

Daimler Truck North America, together with scientists from Oregon State University, are working on a super-powerful electric truck. The details of the new model from the cargo division of Mercedes-Benz were revealed on the electrive website.

The truck will be produced under the Freightliner brand – this brand belongs to Mercedes. It will receive an advanced electrical installation with hydrogen fuel cells instead of a battery and an energy management system. This will allow you to reach a range of about 965 kilometers, which is even more than that of the main competitor Tesla Semi.

The development team aims to increase the service life of fuel cells to 25,000 hours. While the technical characteristics of the project remain secret.

Oregon State University said the initial stages of the project will include technology modeling, analysis, concept selection and design. In later stages, the hydrogen truck will be tested in road conditions.

Back in 2021, the US Department of Energy promised Daimler Truck North America a $25.8 million grant for the project. The money will be allocated within the framework of the SuperTruck 3 program.

‘Daimler’s goal is to develop technologies to demonstrate an innovative hydrogen fuel cell electric tractor that exceeds the performance, efficiency and range requirements of heavy-duty long-haul sleeper tractors without compromising payload,’ the company said in a statement.
