Microsoft and OpenAI plan to build Stargate supercomputer for $100 billion

In the face of increasing competition in the field of artificial intelligence, Microsoft and OpenAI have announced plans to create a large-scale Stargate supercomputer project that could cost up to $100 billion. This step is evidence of the intensification of the “arms race” between technology giants in the development and implementation of advanced artificial intelligence technologies.

According to The Information, the two companies are currently in the initial stages of planning this ambitious project, which involves the creation of a huge data center in the United States. The new center is expected to be equipped with millions of advanced artificial intelligence chips and will be the largest of five such facilities planned for development under a long-term partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI over the next six years.

“Stargate should be launched by 2028, with Microsoft taking on most of the funding for the project. The partners are already exploring potential chip suppliers, including Nvidia and AMD, and considering innovative server rack and cooling solutions to cope with the huge computing needs and heat generated by such a large-scale center.

This partnership has already resulted in the creation of several large supercomputers that are used to develop and improve artificial intelligence models, including the popular ChatGPT. The company is also working on expanding its data center in Wisconsin, which could be a prelude to a further large-scale Phase 4 project.

Microsoft’s and OpenAI’s investments in AI projects, which could reach $115 billion, far exceed their current annual spending on global infrastructure. These ambitions are attracting the attention of regulators in the US, UK and Europe, as they raise issues of competition and control over promising technologies.

The implementation of the Stargate project could be an important step in the development of artificial intelligence, demonstrating the will and resources of technology leaders to invest in the future of this field.
