Microsoft is preparing a major redesign of Word, Excel, PowerPoint
It seems that in the coming months, the story of almost a decade ago may repeat itself with Microsoft Office users. In the mid-2000s, Microsoft even had to create pages titled “Where are all the menus and tools?” to help confused users. After all, with the migration from Office 2003 to Office 2007, users found themselves facing a completely new interface. It looks like users of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint will have to get used to them all over again – Microsoft is preparing a major redesign of the Office suite interface.
The company announced that its office software suite is getting a new theme by default. The change will affect Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
The software giant has not yet revealed much about the planned interface change. But he offered some hints on what to expect.
In addition to the new default theme, which is likely to entail a major redesign of the entire Microsoft Office suite, a “new color palette” is also mentioned. It is aimed at providing users with more options for customizing the appearance of the software.
There is also an updated default line thickness, which gives a different look when opening and editing a document or file. But the company also noted that its new default font, Aptos, will be included for the first time.
Aptos belongs to the sans serif family of fonts, a family known for its simple letters, even strokes, and legibility. This new standard font should make Microsoft applications more accessible.
The company also wants to emphasize that, like the previous standard fonts Calibri, Times New Roman, and Arial, the new Aptos will not be mandatory and users will continue to be able to choose from dozens of other fonts.
The preview of the new default theme is already available for Windows and Mac users, as well as for web users. It’s also available for Android and iOS, and Microsoft hopes to begin full rollout in September 2023.
