Microsoft to provide the US Army with an improved version of IVAS AR headsets (based on HoloLens) for testing

The US Army will test a special version of Microsoft’s HoloLens augmented reality headset in August.

According to confirmed reports, Microsoft is to deliver 20 prototypes of IVAS 1.2 (Integrated Visual Augmentation System) glasses by the end of July, and the test will take place in the last days of August. The military will appreciate the functionality, low-light performance, and nausea. The first version of IVAS had shortcomings in these areas, as well as in reliability.

HoloLens is supposed to help with awareness on the battlefield. The infantrymen will be able to see each other’s positions, receive commands and alerts, and use night vision that is hardly noticeable to the enemy. If the test is successful, the next stage of testing will take place from July to September 2024, and in April 2025, the baptism of fire will take place.

If everything goes according to plan, the US Army will spend $21.9 billion on 121 thousand. IVAS units and related infrastructure. However, if the problems are not resolved, Microsoft may not only lose a fat military contract, but also call into question the HoloLens technology itself.
