MQ-9 Reaper creator develops jet drone
The U.S. Army has signed a contract with General Atomics that provides for the company’s participation in the third phase of the LongShot program. It involves the development of a jet drone. DARPA has allocated USD 95 million for the third phase. The drone created under the program will take to the skies by the end of next year.
The third phase of the program involves flight testing of the prototype and training firing at air targets that simulate enemy aircraft. The LongShot jet drone will carry air-to-air missiles.
It is worth noting that General Atomics is not the only participant in the LongShot program. Lockheed Martin is also working on a jet drone. Another participant in the program is Northrop Grumman.
The LongShot drone can be launched from a bomber or fighter aircraft. Such aircraft will be used by the US Air Force to support military aircraft. Thanks to LongShot drones, manned aircraft will be able to attack the enemy from a safer distance.
