NASA’s unmanned helicopter Ingenuity sets a new speed record during its 60th flight over the surface of Mars

This week, the Martian unmanned helicopter Ingenuity made its 60th flight over the surface of the Red Plate. According to NASA, the drone managed to set a new speed record.

The anniversary flight took place on September 25, 2023. The unmanned aerial vehicle was able to climb to a height of 16 meters and cover 340 meters. The 60th flight took 132.8 seconds, which is 3.8 seconds less than the previous attempt.

The Ingenuity was able to set a new speed record, accelerating to 8 m/s (28.8 km/h). The previous record was 6.5 m/s (23.4 km/h). It was installed during the 49th flight over the surface of Mars, which took place on April 2, 2023. By that time, the drone had reached a speed of 5.5 m/s (19.8 km/h) several times.
