Nerve cells of the brain were printed on a 3D printer for the first time – scientists from Oxford have succeeded

Researchers from the University of Oxford have printed nerve cells on a 3D printer for the first time. This may help treat brain injuries in the future.

This was reported by the press service of the University.

The scientists tested the material on mice. After implantation into the brain slices, the cells successfully integrated into the tissues of the experimental animals, created nerve processes and ensured neuronal movement.

Now, the researchers want to improve the printing technique to create more complex multilayered cortical tissues that mimic the architecture of the human brain.

Printed cells can be used not only to treat brain injuries, but also in drug trials, brain development studies, and the study of the basics of cognition.
