New battery for electric vehicles charges in just 10 minutes

And a range of more than 700 km on a single full charge

With improvements in the overall performance of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, the industry has made great strides in achieving greater range for electric vehicles. However, concerns about fast charging are still the main factor stopping consumers from switching to electric cars on a massive scale.

By focusing on the very nature of electrochemistry, CATL continues its innovations in materials, electrochemistry, and system structure, achieving ultra-fast charging, high energy density, and high levels of safety at the same time.

The Chinese battery maker says the new fast-charging battery can provide 400 km of range with a 10-minute charge and a driving range of more than 700 km on a single full charge. The battery is expected to usher in an era of ultra-fast charging of electric vehicles.

CATL claims it is the world’s first LFP battery to support 4C charging. To do this, Shenxing uses superelectronic network cathode technology and fully nanocrystallized LFP cathode material to create a superelectronic network. This facilitates the extraction of lithium ions and a quick response to charging signals.

The Fast Ion Ring technology is used to change the surface properties of graphite, which increases the intercalation channels and shortens the intercalation distance for lithium ions, creating a high-speed highway for current conduction. In addition, the new superconducting electrolyte formula effectively reduces the viscosity of the electrolyte, resulting in improved conductivity.

In addition to ultra-fast 4C charging, Shenxing also provides a long range, fast charging in a wide temperature range, and a high level of safety through structural innovation and the use of intelligent algorithms.

The company claims that the battery can be charged from 0 to 80% in 10 minutes at room temperature. Meanwhile, CATL utilizes cell temperature control technology on system platforms to ensure that cells are quickly heated to the optimum operating temperature range. This enables charging from 0 to 80% in just 30 minutes at temperatures as low as -10°C and uncompromising acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h at low temperatures.
