New generation of Fuchs: Rheinmetall demonstrates modernized infantry fighting vehicle (video)
The German company Rheinmetall has demonstrated its latest innovation. The new generation 6×6 Fuchs Evolution armored vehicle is made in the configuration of a combat reconnaissance vehicle.
The premiere show at Eurosatory 2024 in Paris demonstrated to the world a significant step forward by Rheinmetal developers in both the design and technical capabilities of the combat vehicle. Fuchs means “fox” and the car’s characteristics and appearance are fully consistent with the habits and good looks of this predator.
Firstly, the new Fuchs Evolution is designed in response to the growing challenges and needs of modern warfare. Secondly, it is significantly ahead of previous versions in terms of capabilities. It features an advanced drivetrain and advanced digital architecture of the electric vehicle, which gives the driver and crew leader improved situational awareness, load, etc.
At the same time, the vehicle not only retains its amphibious capability, but also provides versatility in various working environments. Improvements to the vehicle’s combat system included a medium-caliber turret and dual independent long-range optoelectronics. The 360° all-round view system and integrated matrices of laser and acoustic warning sensors with countermeasures have also been improved.
All of these features allow Fuchs Evo to detect and avoid enemy movements, collecting important intelligence. The optional dual operator station with NATO GVA interfaces allows the commander and operator to seamlessly switch and distribute tasks, increasing operational flexibility.
The fact that this machine is likely to be manufactured in Ukraine at a joint venture with Rheinmetal adds to the intrigue. At least, its previous version. However, this will happen neither today nor tomorrow, but after the production facilities have established the maintenance and repair of armored vehicles. That’s when Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger said in an interview with Bild that the company plans to “launch production of armored vehicles, such as Fuchs armored personnel carriers, as soon as possible.”
The new version of the “Fox” Evo has a much larger interior of the landing compartment. Depending on the equipment, the internal volume ranges from 10 to 11.5 cubic meters. The vehicle has a GVWR of 25 tons, of which 9 tons is payload, and is powered by a 455-horsepower turbodiesel engine.
On the exhibition podium, the wheeled reconnaissance vehicle is displayed with an unmanned 25-mm tower and a sensor mast. The architecture allows to expand the combat palette by deploying a short-range SAM or mortar system. In addition to the combat reconnaissance version, the manufacturer is ready to fulfil orders for medical evacuation, command and staff vehicles, communications, etc.
