Not all iPhones will get iOS 17: list of incompatible models

The iOS 17 firmware, which will be publicly released in the fall, brings many useful features. For example, it will tell you what a particular light on your car’s dashboard means. It will also help you figure out what mode to use to wash your clothes and how to iron them. It also allows you to forward contacts with one touch. But Apple stopped supporting three iPhone models in 2023.

Here is a list of smartphones that will not receive this firmware.

The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X are well-known models that will not be included in the list of compatible devices. All three iPhones were released back in 2017.

All iPhones older than these will also not receive the iOS 17 update.

Users of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR can breathe a sigh of relief (for now), as these models were released a year later and will receive the iOS 17 update.

Other phones on the lucky list include the iPhone SE (2020 and 2022 models) and the entire iPhone 11, 12, 13, and 14 series.

It is a well-known tradition for Apple to remove a few old models from its new software every year. Apple has a history of supporting devices with its new software for about five years.

Given that the iPhone X and iPhone 8 were released in 2017, it’s no surprise that they’re excluded from the iOS 17 update. iPhones older than the iPhone 8 did not receive iOS 16, while the iPhone 7 was the edge for iOS 15. The observed trend is quite obvious and predictable.
