Now it is truly contactless payment: in the next 5 years, the range of NFC will increase 6 times
The NFC Forum, which was founded in 2004 by Sony, NXP Semiconductors, and Nokia to improve NFC, has published a plan for the development of the technology in the next 5 years – until 2028.
What to expect
The most important thing is that developers want to increase the range of NFC to make payment for goods truly contactless. Currently, the optimal distance is only 5 mm, which is why you often have to actually touch the terminal with your smartphone. But in the future, this figure will be increased by 4-6 times, i.e. to about 30 mm.
Next, the NFC charging power should increase from 1 W to 3 W. This should bring wireless charging to new and smaller form factors, changing industrial design and defining new markets. In theory, this applies to wireless headphones and other small gadgets.
The organization also seems to have spied on Apple’s Tap to Pay feature and now plans to build into the NFC standard the ability to use a smartphone as a payment terminal.
Finally, NFC should become multifunctional. Simply put, once you hold your smartphone up to a terminal or reader, you can perform several of the same functions. For example, presenting several movie tickets at once.
