Poland fines Amazon $7.8 million for false information about products
In Poland, the consumer protection union UOKiK imposed a fine of 31 million zlotys ($7.8 million) on Amazon. According to Reuters, the fine was imposed because the company misled customers about the availability of goods and delivery times.
According to the regulator, UOKiK has received many complaints from customers who have not received their orders. Tomasz Hrostny, Chairman of UOKiK, emphasized that consumers expect that the information provided by merchants on the availability of goods and delivery times is accurate and not misleading.
UOKiK especially pointed to the practice of using time counters on Amazon’s website, which signal the need to place an order quickly for guaranteed delivery, as potentially misleading, as they do not guarantee actual delivery time.
In response to this decision, an Amazon representative said that the company intends to appeal. The company said in a statement that although most deliveries are made on time, in case of delays or order cancellations, customers can ask for help and Amazon will take steps to remedy the situation. The company also noted that over the past year, it has been cooperating with UOKiK and proposed voluntary amendments to improve customer service on Amazon.pl, emphasizing its compliance with legal standards in all countries of operation.
