Poland plans to grant refugees from Ukraine with UKR status the right to obtain temporary residence permits (temporary residence cards)
This was announced by Deputy Minister of the Interior and Administration of Poland Maciej Duszczyk, Rzeczpospolita reports.
As planned by the authorities, a Ukrainian with PESEL UKR will be able to change his or her status from temporary protection under the Special Law to temporary residence (granted for three years). To do this, the refugee will have to be checked by the Internal Security Agency, the Border Guard Service, and the police.
“When providing temporary residence to such people, we must check them, including for the security of the state,” the official explained.
All refugees will be able to obtain a temporary residence permit, regardless of whether they are employed or not, pensioners or students, children under 6 years of age or older.
From July 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025, Ukrainians who want to change their status will have to register on the new electronic portal and visit city or municipal offices to submit the necessary documents. The first temporary residence permits will be issued in 2025. They will be valid for 3 years. The new status will take effect when the person picks up their new documents. Until then, it will be under temporary protection, Nash Vybir clarifies.
The government also wants to introduce compulsory education for Ukrainian children in Poland starting in September (currently, a special act stipulates that parents can choose whether their child will study in Polish schools in person or online). Warsaw claims that it does not even know the exact number of Ukrainian children in Poland, so it is seeking to find out.
The government also plans to eliminate the system of financing the stay of Ukrainians (40 zlotys per day per person) in small boarding houses for up to ten people.
