Poland tightens control and introduces inspections of goods coming from Ukraine

The Polish government has announced that it will tighten control on the border with Ukraine. Warsaw wants to intensify inspections of goods coming from Ukraine.

The head of the Polish agency, Czeslaw Sekerski, conducted inspections at the Medyka border crossing point. Earlier, he visited the Korchova checkpoint on the border with Ukraine.

Sekersky announces tighter control and more inspections.

“Excessive imports of agricultural products from Ukraine that do not meet EU production requirements threaten the competitiveness of Polish agriculture,” the ministry said in a statement.

Polish Deputy Minister of Agriculture Michal Kolodziejczak has also been inspecting border crossing points for the second day in a row. Today he visited the Yahodyn-Dorogusk checkpoint and yesterday he visited Hrubeshuv. He noted that he oversees inspections of agricultural goods imported from Ukraine. Kolodziejczak also published a photo of low-quality frozen raspberries that were turned around at the border. “After such raspberries, there is only one conclusion: an embargo on Ukrainian frozen raspberries, of which more than 60 thousand tons were delivered to Poland in 2023,” he wrote on Twitter (X).

Blockade of the Ukrainian border

As a reminder, on November 6, 2023, Polish carriers began strikes on the border with Ukraine. Polish protesters demanded the return of the pass system for Ukrainian carriers.

On January 6, Polish farmers stopped blocking the Medyka-Shehyni checkpoint, and truck traffic was restored.

On January 17, 2024, the Polish government signed an agreement with carriers to unblock the border with Ukraine. As part of the agreement, the parties agreed to suspend protests at the entrances to the three border crossing points until March 1.

On January 31, the European Commission recommended extending the abolition of import duties for agricultural goods from Ukraine until 2024, but also proposed to introduce a “safeguard” for EU farmers.
