Polish short-range air defense system Mala NAREW, capable of hitting a target at a distance of more than 25 km

Mala NAREW is a new short-range air defense system developed for the Polish Armed Forces. The system is designed to protect troops and facilities in the combat zone. The system is being developed by the Polish defense consortium PGZ-NAREW.

The Republic of Poland is developing a three-tiered air defense system that includes long-range WISLA, short-range NAREW, and very short-range Pilica+ air defense systems.

The Mala NAREW fire unit consists of three iLauncher guided anti-aircraft missile launchers and two transport and reloading vehicles mounted on the 8×8 JELCZ P882.57 T21 TS DOW highly mobile chassis, a deployable SOLA radar and a ZEN weapon control device.

The system can launch modular Common Anti-Air Modular Missiles (CAMM), which are designed for land and sea operations.

The battery of NAREW systems includes various components, such as specialized vehicles, combat and operational control cabins, mobile communication units, optoelectronic sensors, missiles, missile launchers, transport and reloading vehicles, as well as training and technical support.

In addition, the systems include radars, including the SAJNA multifunctional fire control radar, the P-18PL preliminary target detection radar, and passive emitter tracking/passive coherent location radars.

The new generation CAMM missiles provide full protection against air threats. The 3.2-meter-long rocket has a diameter of 166 mm and weighs 99 kg. It moves at supersonic speed and hits a target at a distance of more than 25 km.

The CAMM includes an active RF searcher that ensures reliable operation in all weather conditions and effectively filters out interference. The soft vertical launch technology allows firing at 360° targets with minimal launch signature and high performance. It has a high rate of fire at several simultaneous targets.

SOLA is a multi-purpose three-dimensional radar designed to detect and track airborne targets. It can operate independently or as a sensor in ground-based air defense systems, using both wired and wireless data transmission capabilities. The radar can be controlled from the nearest console or remotely, at a maximum distance of 400 meters.

The first Mala NAREW short-range air defense system was put into service with the 18th Anti-Aircraft Regiment from Zamość, part of the Polish Armed Forces, in 2022. In June 2023, the system performed combat and experimental missile firing at the Central Air Force Range in Ustka, successfully neutralizing three targets.
