Volkswagen and Renault are planning to jointly develop an electric vehicle. Yes, it is a project to develop a “green” model that will cost about 20,000 euros. In addition, this model can become one of the most affordable electric vehicles on the European market and compete with Chinese cars.
According to Automotive News, citing Handelsblatt, negotiations between the companies are currently only at the initial stage. The information that Volkswagen’s lineup could be replenished with a budget electric car that could compete with Chinese ones in terms of cost appeared last month. At the time, it was announced that the new product, if it does come to market, will be launched in the second half of this decade.
The thing is that only after 2025 will it be possible to significantly reduce the price tag of the traction battery, the most expensive element in the design of an electric car. Volkswagen is already working on Unified Battery Cells, the mass production of which will reduce the cost of batteries by half.
According to the new information, the Bavarian concern is in talks with several potential partners who may participate in the project. Among them was Renault, which had previously announced its readiness to bring an affordable entry-level electric car to the market. Thus, in February next year, the French brand will present a production electric hatchback Renault 5, inspired by the R5 model of the 70s of the last century.
