Romanian fighter jets based in the Baltic States as part of NATO’s air policing mission have intercepted two Russian Su-27s.
On Friday, April 7, two Romanian F-16 fighters from the Carpathian Vipers were alerted by the NATO Air Operations Center in Germany to intercept two aircraft. This was reported by the Romanian Air Force.
“Two unidentified aircraft were detected in the NATO area of responsibility flying over international waters. In accordance with standard procedures, Romanian F-16s were alerted to clarify the air situation. After interception, the aircraft were identified as two Su-27 flankers belonging to the Russian Federation. They were safely removed from the Alliance’s area of responsibility,” the statement said.
The Romanian Air Force noted that the interception within the framework of the enhanced air policing mission in the Baltic States was successful and confirmed the high level of combat capability of the Carpathian Vipers unit and the ability of the Romanian Air Force to deploy and use F-16 aircraft in NATO.
As a reminder, on April 7, Ukrainian defenders shot down an enemy Su-25 near Mariinka in Donetsk region. The Russian “Rook” was landed by an air defense unit of one of the military units of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
