russia announces that it has put sarmat ballistic missiles with a range of up to 18,000 km on alert

These missiles are capable of carrying a nuclear payload of 7.5 megatons

The Russian company Roscosmos planned to put RS-28 Sarmat strategic missile systems (SS-X-30 according to NATO classification) on combat duty at the end of 2022. However, this has only been done now.

What is known

The RS-28 Sarmat is a mine-based strategic missile system. It consists of an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of delivering a 10-ton warhead to any part of the world.

Development of the system began about 20 years ago to replace the R-36M2, which has been in service since 1988. The new intercontinental ballistic missile is capable of carrying a 7.5 megaton nuclear payload. The launch range is 18,000 km.

The first test of the rocket took place on April 20 last year at the Plesetsk cosmodrome. At the time, the Russians reported that the launch had achieved all of its goals, but it is unclear how true this statement is.
