The Kremlin has begun to play the Wunderwaffe card again with its “Poseidon”; in the fantasies of the racists, it is supposed to simply wash away entire cities with a radioactive tsunami.
The state-run Russian news agency TASS, citing its own sources, reports that the Kremlin plans to deploy an entire division of Poseidon submarines in Kamchatka.
Its formation should take place at the end of 2024 – the second half of 2025. At the same time, the creation of coastal infrastructure is already underway and should be completed in early 2024.
Given that a submarine division in Russia usually consists of 5-8 submarines, it will obviously be very far from full strength if we are talking about Poseidon carriers. As of now, only the only existing carrier of these mega-torpedoes is known to exist, the BS-329 Belgorod, which is an experimental boat converted from the 949A Antey.
It is only in 2024-2025 that the Khabarovsk is to join the Russian Pacific Fleet, the first representative of the 09851 project specially designed for the Poseidon. The second submarine under this project is expected to be delivered no earlier than 2027. And thus, the Kremlin will not be able to reach the authorized strength of the division for a long, long time. Therefore, it is likely that other submarines may be included in this division, possibly by transferring them from other divisions and other fleets.
At the same time, the deployment of Poseidon carriers in Kamchatka is quite important in terms of the hypothetical use of this weapon in a World War III scenario. The task of the Russian Pacific Fleet is to take possible actions against the United States and its allies, including Japan and Australia, as well as against China.
And the deployment of the Poseidons at the Kamchatka base, rather than at the Northern Fleet, which is responsible for actions against the United States and the European segment of NATO, fully demonstrates Moscow’s uncertainty in its relations with Beijing.
