Russian Su-24 violated Swedish airspace
On June 14, a Russian Su-24 warplane violated Swedish airspace, appearing east of the southern tip of Gotland, according to the Swedish Armed Forces.
What is known
This incident was the first case of airspace violation since Sweden joined NATO. The Swedish army published a photo of the Russian plane that committed the violation.
The crew of the Su-24 was verbally warned by the Swedish Air Combat Command, but the Russians ignored the warning and continued to fly in the Swedish sky. In response, the country raised its JAS-39 Gripen fighters to intercept the intruder. Escorted by Swedish fighters, the Su-24 was forced to leave the airspace.
Chief of the Swedish Air Force Jonas Wikman said: “Russia’s actions are unacceptable and show a lack of respect for our territorial integrity. We have been following the whole process and were there to intervene.”
At this time, it is difficult to determine which variant of the Su-24 was involved, as it can be either a bomber (Su-24M) or a reconnaissance aircraft (Su-24MR).
