Samsung updates Bixby: integrating generative AI to improve voice assistant
Samsung is considering adding generative artificial intelligence technology to its Bixby voice assistant to improve its functionality and appeal.
Bixby, launched in 2017 with the Galaxy S8 smartphone, offered a number of features, including translation and recommendations, but its capabilities were relatively limited compared to modern chatbots based on generative AI, such as ChatGPT.
In an interview with CNBC, Won-joon Choi, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile division, said that the company should “rethink” the role of Bixby to update it with large language modeling (LLM) technology and generative AI.
Choi noted that the integration of generative AI will make interacting with Bixby more natural and develop an interface that better supports Samsung products within their ecosystem. However, no specific timeline for the implementation of these features has been announced yet.
Samsung has focused on developing artificial intelligence capabilities at a time when investors are closely watching Apple’s plans in this area. At the annual WWDC developer conference in June, Apple is expected to introduce some AI features in its products.
The integration of advanced generative AI technologies is seen as an important step to increase the competitiveness of Samsung devices and meet the growing demand of users for more advanced AI capabilities.
