Samsung updates Bixby with generative AI to improve interaction

Samsung intends to breathe new life into its Bixby voice assistant by integrating generative artificial intelligence technology. This step is intended to make Bixby more functional and attractive to users. Since its launch in 2017 with the Galaxy S8, Bixby has offered a number of useful features, such as translation and recommendations, but its capabilities were considered limited compared to those of modern generative chatbots like ChatGPT.

In an interview with CNBC, Won-joon Choi, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile division, emphasized the need to “rethink” the role of Bixby by adapting it to large language modeling (LLM) and generative artificial intelligence technologies. According to him, this update will make the Bixby interface more natural for the user and improve support for Samsung products within their ecosystem.

So far, the company has not announced a specific timeline for the implementation of these plans, but it is clear that Samsung is seeking to develop its artificial intelligence technologies amid growing investor attention to the plans of its main competitor, Apple, in this area. Apple is also expected to unveil new AI features at its annual WWDC developer conference in June.

The integration of generative artificial intelligence into Bixby is considered a key step to increase the competitiveness of Samsung’s products and meet the demand for more advanced AI capabilities among users.
