South Korea joined the supply of arms to Ukraine for the first time

The US will purchase from Seoul the shells for the artillery guns that Ukraine needs, and South Korea will not formally violate its obligations.

For the first time, South Korea announced its agreement to sell shells to the United States for supply to Ukraine. The United States plans to buy about 100,000 shells for 155 mm cannon artillery.

As estimated in Washington, such a number of shells will be enough for intensive fighting in Ukraine for several weeks. The terms of the agreement between the countries are not mentioned.

WSJ notes that this method of sending weapons through the US will allow South Korea to formally remain within the framework of a public commitment not to supply lethal military weapons to Ukraine. While also helping the US, which is a key ally in containing North Korea, Seoul is strengthening relations within its camp. It is also beneficial for the United States, which will be able to avoid wasting its own military arsenals under such an agreement.
