Sweden allows Ukraine to use transferred weapons to strike Russian targets
Sweden allows the Ukrainian Defense Forces to use the provided weapons to strike at Russian territory.
This was stated by Swedish Defense Minister Paul Johnson in an interview with Hallandsposten.
“Ukraine is the object of an unprovoked and illegal aggressive war by Russia. According to international law, Ukraine has the right to defend itself through military actions directed against the enemy’s territory, if these actions are in accordance with the laws and customs of war. Sweden supports international law and Ukraine’s right to self-defense,” he said.
“Militarnyi reported on May 25 that the NATO Secretary General called for the abolition of the ban on the use of Western weapons to strike targets in Russia.
The Secretary General noted that this is important right now, when much of the fighting is taking place in Kharkiv, not far from the border.
“Denying Ukraine the ability to use these weapons against legitimate military targets on Russian territory makes it very difficult for Ukraine to defend itself,” Stoltenberg added.
Also recently, a group of U.S. congressmen called for allowing Ukraine to use U.S. weapons to strike Russian territory.
The appeal states that Ukrainians cannot effectively defend themselves because of the policies of the administration of US President Joe Biden.
“It is important that the Biden administration empowers Ukraine’s military leadership to conduct the full range of operations necessary to respond to Russia’s unprovoked attack on their sovereign soil,” the letter reads.
Earlier, a French parliamentarian made such a request, calling for the lifting of restrictions on strikes on Russian territory with weapons provided by France.
The politician wrote a letter to the French leadership, calling for them to abandon “restraint and make a decision” following the example of the UK, which allowed Ukrainian troops to use its weapons against Russia.
At the same time, he emphasized that neither France nor Ukraine’s other Western partners want to go to war with Russia.
