“Syrian Express: Russia uses new tactics to transport weapons in the Black Sea
The Crimean Wind monitoring group provided information on Russian arms transportation of the so-called Syrian Express.
According to the group:
- The vessels BALTIC LEADER and LADY MARIIA reached Sinop and left Turkish waters by disabling the AIS recognition system.
- YAZ and SPARTAN IV military transports approached the Bosphorus.
Russian ships transporting weapons and ammunition from Syria have begun to use new tactics in the Black Sea.
“By using merchant ships to transport military cargo, Russia is circumventing the ban on the movement of warships through the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits imposed by Turkey since the beginning of the war in Ukraine under the Montreux Convention. Most of the vessels used belong to the Russian Defense Ministry-controlled company Oboronlogistika, which is subject to US sanctions,” the monitoring group said.
