Taiwan’s Ministry of Economy on Tuesday announced the expansion of the list of sanctioned goods for Russia and Belarus to prevent the use of Taiwanese high-tech goods for military purposes.
According to Reuters, Taiwan has condemned Russia’s attack and has already joined the Western-led sanctions, although this is largely a symbolic action, as there is minimal direct trade between the island and Russia.
The list includes equipment for the production of semiconductors, in which Taiwan is a world leader, as well as certain chemicals and medicines. The new sanctions are in line with those already announced by the European Union, the United States and other countries.
Earlier, the United States, the EU and other countries, taking into account the remnants of weapons in Ukrainian fields, compiled a “priority list” of electronics, mechanics and equipment that are widely used for commercial purposes and can be used to manufacture weapons.
Applications for export licenses will not be approved “in principle”, the ministry said. The war in Ukraine is attracting a lot of attention in Taiwan, as many people are drawing parallels between what is happening here and what could happen if China ever uses force to gain control of the island, which it considers its territory.
