Teledyne introduces bullets with EXACTO targeting system (video)
Teledyne Scientific & Imaging, a defense manufacturer operating in the North American market, has developed the EXACTO extreme accuracy munition. The information was made public by DARPA.
With the help of the EXACTO guidance system, a bullet can be turned into a homing projectile. Such ammunition can be used to fire at moving targets. After the shot, the sniper can adjust the trajectory of the bullet. The EXACTO guidance system is able to do most of the work of the shooter.
DARPA has published a test video on YouTube. In it, you can see how the bullet changes its trajectory dramatically during flight. The shooter was aiming at a target to demonstrate how the guidance system works.
Another video shows how a bullet with a guidance system changes its flight path to hit a moving target.
According to Jerome Dunn, who manages the guidance system development program at DARPA, the firing tests showed that EXACTO bullets easily hit evasive and moving targets at sniper ranges with extreme accuracy. This result is impossible to achieve with conventional ammunition.
The EXACTO system will weigh about 20 kg. It will be able to operate for up to 14 hours on a single battery charge. Information about the project is classified. According to experts, EXACTO uses a laser to guide the bullet to the target. The operator adjusts the trajectory of the bullet by means of “fins” located in the tail section.
