Tesla has introduced an updated steering wheel
Tesla is introducing an updated version of its controversial steering wheel that promises not only improved quality and more durable materials, but also significant changes to the placement of the signal button.
An image of the new steering wheel was posted on social media, which shows that the signal button is now located in the center, as it should be. The seams look more reliable, and the overall design corresponds to the high level of “premium” of Tesla cars. According to those who have already evaluated the new steering wheel, it is designed to withstand more intensive use.
This is a significant improvement, given that previously owners complained about premature wear of the steering wheel, when the finish began to peel off after 6440 km.
In addition, the horn activation system was redesigned. Previously, the capacity button was used for this purpose, which was often triggered by accident. Tesla owners have suggested moving the horn button because of its poor placement. CEO Elon Musk has recognized the problem and said that a software update will allow the signal to be activated by pressing the right side of the steering wheel. It seems that similar changes have been made to the traditional round steering wheel, which is standard on all models.
Recall that the steering wheel is now offered as an optional extra for $ 1,000 for the Model S and Model X, including Plaid versions.
Tesla first announced the improved steering wheel in July 2023, when a company employee shared that customers should wait to replace their defective steering wheels until an updated version with improved materials is available. Although the initial timeline was incorrect, Tesla eventually introduced a more durable version with a traditional horn button.
Improving product quality, even in small ways, is a great step from Tesla. Not all problems can be solved by updating the software, and it is often the smallest flaws that can drive consumers away from a brand. The steering wheel is the first thing the driver comes into contact with when entering the car, and it should reflect the value of the car. At a price of $80,000 or more for a Model S or Model X, every detail in them must be premium. Hopefully, the new materials will create the sense of quality and durability expected from Tesla products.
