Tesla now has four car factories that together can produce nearly two million cars a year

Tesla has significantly increased its production capacity at its four existing car plants — their combined capacity reaches two million vehicles per year. This comes from a recent financial report for the second quarter, which the famous electric carmaker ended with record figures. Tesla now has four car factories that together can produce almost two million cars a year – 1.6 times more than at the beginning of the year despite the first two years of reduced sales due to a 22-day plant shutdown in Shanghai (which caused production to be reduced by over 50,000 vehicles).

In just one quarter, Tesla significantly increased the production capacity at all its factories – 1.6 times, from 1.2 million to 1.9 million. And this is certainly a significant achievement. Here’s manufacturer-reported capacity for the end of Q1 2022 (above) versus new capacity reported today for the end of Q2 2022 (below):

Another modernization of the main factory in Fremont helped to increase the volume of production of Model 3 and Model Y by another 10% – from 500 thousand to 550 thousand cars per year. The other day, it was reported about the release of the two millionth electric car. At the same time, total sales of Tesla electric cars reached almost 3 million.

Production capacity increased the most at the Shanghai Tesla Gigafactory — from 450,000 to more than 750,000 cars per year, which by a large margin makes the company the largest factory for the production of electric cars in the world. It was previously reported that after the launch of the second Giga Shanghai (most likely, this will happen at the end of 2023), the total capacity of Tesla factories in China will be 1.5 million cars per year. Separately, Tesla noted in the report that after being forced to shut down due to the new coronavirus outbreak in the last month of the quarter, the plant set a production record, and that recent upgrades will ensure a steady further increase in production rates. The company also published new photos of Giga Shanghai.

In March-April, Tesla opened two new factories with an interval of two weeks – the first European Giga Berlin-Brandenburg and another one in the USA Giga Texas. Mass production of the Model Y compact crossover has already begun on both, and now the automaker is gradually ramping up production. The same capacity is specified for both plants — 250,000 units each. Interestingly, the company reached such a capacity at Giga Texas even with the previous design of the battery units. Engineers are currently setting up the lines where the Model Y will be produced with a new optimized design and 4680 elements of its own development (the battery pack is part of the body structure that connects the front and rear parts of the underbody). This will ensure further increase in production volumes.

And more pictures of the German Giga Berlin-Brandenburg – there the team has already reached the pace of producing 1,000 Model Y every week, using the classic 2170 battery cells:

At the beginning of the year, Elon Musk assumed that Tesla could ship 1.5 million cars to customers by the end of 2022. This coincides with previous estimates from industry observers. During the first half of the year, Tesla has already shipped 563,295 cars to customers. That is, to achieve the goal, it is necessary to double the result of the previous two quarters and sell almost 940 thousand cars. In the current conditions, it seems unrealistic. Tesla now has four car factories that together can produce almost two million cars a year – 1.6 times more than at the beginning of the year, but previously Tesla has repeatedly proven that it is capable of surprising and carrying out such technological exploits
