The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine released a detailed video of how the "Boyko towers" were liberated and told about the trophies captured as a result of the unique operation
Special Forces of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine managed to return the so-called “Boyko towers” in the Black Sea, which had been occupied by Russia since 2015 and actively used for military purposes since February 2022, to Ukraine’s control as a result of a unique operation. This was reported by the press service of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.
As noted, the DIU special forces managed to regain control of the Petro Godovanets and Ukraina drilling platforms and the Tavrida and Syvash jack-up drilling rigs.
In addition, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine also reports a number of trophies obtained as a result of this operation. These are unguided aircraft missiles (the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reminds us that Russia used Boyko towers as helicopter landing sites, storing weapons and fuel there), as well as the Neva radar station, which is designed to detect and track surface targets.
The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reminds that it was during this operation to liberate Boyko’s towers that Ukrainian special forces repelled a Russian Su-30 attack, which was filmed by a mysterious stealth drone.
The Russian aircraft failed to hit the special forces boats, while the GUR fighters fired a missile from a man-portable air defense system at the Su-30, which damaged the enemy aircraft and forced it to return to the airfield.
During the maneuvering of the DIU boats, one of the special forces was overboard, and the boats were forced to retreat. Eventually, the soldier with the call sign “Conan” was found and rescued by a UAV, having spent more than 14 hours in the open sea.
“This operation was kept secret all the time, because if the enemy realized that we were approaching him so boldly, he would have countered us in one way or another,” says one of the DIU’s Special Forces officers.
The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine rightly calls this operation unique – but it was also equally dangerous, as the Special Forces had to cover considerable distances on their way to the target, being in the palm of the enemy’s hand.
The preliminary reconnaissance of the Boyko towers occupied by the racists was carried out from an unmanned aerial vehicle: “We flew around with a drone, examined the territory, looked at the layout of the platforms themselves, the approach, the west, the length of the stairs we will be moving along, the possible directions where there may be mines, etc.”, says the special forces officer.
In other words, the Ukrainian drone managed to stay in the air for quite a long time, despite the fact that Russia could theoretically have shot it down, and this allowed the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine to plan its further actions.
According to the Special Forces officer, the most difficult part was mooring and getting on the platform because the sea was stormy, but eventually they managed to do it and proceed with further examination of the platform.
While the DIU Special Forces were performing their tasks on the platform, a Russian Su-30 fighter flew by them just 500 meters away, and three to four minutes later a bombing strike was launched on Zmiinyi Island.
During this stage of the operation, the Special Forces cut down a Neva radar system from one of the towers and returned to the rig. The DIU fighters returned to the rig a few days later to pick up the enemy trophies they had found during their previous visit.
“For Ukraine, the operation to return the drilling platforms in the Black Sea was of strategic importance – as a result, today Russia has lost the ability to use the so-called Boyko rigs for military purposes. Deprived of the reconnaissance equipment on these rigs, Russia is deprived of the opportunity to fully control the Black Sea,” the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine summarizes.
