The European Union has closed its borders to trucks from Russia and Belarus

The European Union has banned the import and transit of new goods by road from Russia and Belarus to the EU since April 9.

This is stated in the EU decision, which was published in the Official Journal.

It is noted that trucks from Russia and Belarus, which were going to enter the EU, will not be able to do so yesterday. Starting on April 16, the European Union will introduce a total ban on these trucks crossing the EU border.

The ban on crossing the EU borders by trucks between Russia and Belarus does not apply until April 16 for cargo transportation, which began before April 9, if vehicles have already been in the EU before, or transit is required to return to Russia and Belarus.

At the same time, the EU ban does not apply to mail trucks. The EU may also allow the carriage of goods from Russia and Belarus if such carriage is necessary for:

  • purchase, import or transit in the EU of natural gas and oil, including petroleum products, as well as titanium, aluminum, copper, nickel, palladium and iron ore;
  • purchase, import or transit in the EU of pharmaceutical, medical, agricultural and food products, including wheat and fertilizers;
  • humanitarian goals;
  • diplomatic missions and consular posts of the European Union and EU countries in Belarus, including delegations, embassies and missions, or international organizations in Belarus, which have immunities in accordance with international law.

The EU must also inform the other EU countries and the Commission of any decision to authorize the entry of trucks from Russia and Belarus within two weeks of the authorization.
