The F-15 Eagle is getting a new electronic warfare system to break through enemy air defense systems

The US Air Force has begun installing a new electronic warfare system on the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle fighter.

The EPAWSS (Eagle Passive/Active Warning and Survivability System) system was developed by the British defense company BAE Systems. It uses a database of radio signal sources to identify radars of enemy anti-aircraft missile systems. The integration takes place jointly with the Boeing company.

EPAWSS will enable fighters to operate in the conditions of a modern threat with a dense radio frequency background. The system can identify the types of radio signal sources, and then automatically determine which radio electronic suppression method should be used.

EPAWSS was purchased in 2020. In 2021, the US Air Force first tested the F-15 Eagle with EPAWSS. The planes were used to clear the way for the fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighters. A total of 12 open trials have been conducted since 2021.

The cost of the Eagle Passive/Active Warning and Survivability System is $4 billion. By 2030, the United States plans to install such an electronic warfare system on all aircraft.
