The French Parliament calls for allowing Ukraine to use French weapons to strike at Russian territory
Jean-Louis Bourlange, chairman of the French parliament’s foreign affairs committee, called on the French government to allow Ukraine to use French weapons to strike at Russian territory. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Le Figaro.
According to Le Figaro, Bourlange sent a letter to the French leadership calling for the abandonment of “restraint” and a decision following the example of the UK. Britain recently authorized Ukrainian troops to use British weapons to strike Russia.
“The time seems to have come… The right to self-defense excludes the right to take refuge in the aggressor’s territory,” Burlange emphasized. He added that the change in the doctrine would be entirely legal, as it would put an end to the asymmetry between the aggressor and the victim.
At the same time, Jean-Louis Bourlange emphasized that neither France nor Ukraine’s other Western partners want to go to war with Russia. “Therefore, it is not about them interfering in the theater of war, but about removing an unjustified taboo,” he said in his letter.
Western weapons strikes on Russia
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine has been restricted in its ability to use weapons received from Western countries to strike at Russian territory. This limitation was explained by the fact that the weapons were provided for defense against Russia, not for offense, which is very ineffective, because Russia and the Russians can wage this war for decades if their military power on their territory is not destroyed.
However, this year there have been some changes in this matter. For example, after his visit to Kyiv, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said that Ukraine has the right to use British weapons to strike at Russian territory.
At the same time, the United States still adheres to the policy of limiting Ukraine’s strikes against Russia. However, during a visit to Kyiv in May, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken noted that Ukraine chooses how to wage war, but the US does not encourage strikes against Russia.
