The Hague court issues arrest warrants for Shoigu and Gerasimov

The Pre-Trial Chamber II of the International Criminal Court (The Hague) issued arrest warrants for former Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov.

This is said in the official statement of the ICC.

“On June 24, 2024, Pre-Trial Chamber II of the International Criminal Court, composed of Judge Rosario Salvatore Aital, presiding, Judge Sergio Gerardo Ugalde Godinez and Judge Haikel Ben Mahfoud, issued arrest warrants for two individuals, Mr. Sergei Kuzugetovich Shoigu and Mr. Valery Vasilyevich Gerasimov, in the context of the situation in Ukraine for alleged international crimes committed from at least October 10, 2022, to at least March 9, 2023,” the ICC said.

The report states that Shoigu and Gerasimov are responsible for war crimes in the form of attacks on civilian objects, causing excessive harm to civilians or damage to civilian objects, and crimes against humanity.

The ICC notes that two arrest warrants were issued at the request of the prosecutor’s office.

Earlier, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for two Russian army commanders, Sergei Kobylash and Viktor Sokolov.
