The new Jackal 3 light vehicle is designed for use by reconnaissance units and infantry battalions. The third generation of Jackal will be a partial replacement of the existing fleet of vehicles of this family of 1st and 2nd generation.
The Jackal is a two-axle all-wheel drive off-road vehicle, completely open from the top, without doors and has several safety arcs. This allows the crew to quickly leave their seats if necessary and provides a good view. The V-shaped bottom reduces the impact of the shock wave when detonated on mines and improvised explosive devices.
The vehicle’s crew consists of three people: the driver, according to the British tradition, is positioned on the right, the commander with a 7.62 mm machine gun is on his left, and the rifleman is behind them. It is equipped with a turret with a 12.7 mm machine gun, and can also be equipped with a small-caliber automatic gun or a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher.
Jackal for special forces with a crew and full armament, including 7.62-mm and 12.7-mm machine guns. On the Jackal 2 model, the turret is slightly shifted forward compared to the basic version. Smoke grenade launchers are installed in the front and rear of the vehicle. At the request of the customer, instead of a conventional turret, it can be equipped with a remote-controlled gun.
The Jackal is equipped with a Cummins ISBe diesel engine with a displacement of 5.9 liters and an output of 185 hp. The suspension is independent on double wishbones with pneumatic springs and shock absorbers with variable ride height.
The weight of the third generation Jackal is 9 tons, while the second generation has a weight of 7.5 tons. The general concept of the vehicle is to use lightweight units, and the modular design allows it to be used both for personnel transportation and logistics tasks.
The Jackal 3 can also be equipped with modular ballistic protection plates and machine tools that can mount the 7.62 mm FN MAG and 12.7 mm M2 Browning machine guns.
