The Ministry of Economy commented on why Ukraine needs daylight saving time

Ukraine switches to daylight saving time on Sunday, March 31. At 3 (three) o’clock Kyiv time, the clock is moved forward by 1 (one) hour.

The switch to winter and summer time is made in accordance with the 1996 Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine “On the Procedure for Calculating Time in Ukraine”.

Every year on the last Sunday in March at 3 o’clock the clock is set back 1 hour, and on the last Sunday in October at 4 o’clock it is set back 1 hour.

“The time in force in Ukraine in winter is natural for the territory of our country and corresponds to its geographical location, and in the period from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October, daylight saving time is introduced in order to effectively use the daylight hours,” the statement said.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the introduction of daylight saving time is a common international practice. In the European Union, a 2001 decision was made according to which the EU member states switched to daylight saving time at the end of March and to winter time at the end of October.

Attempts to cancel daylight saving time

In recent years, Ukraine has made two unsuccessful attempts to cancel daylight saving time. The first one was in 2011, when the Party of Regions almost passed this decision through the Verkhovna Rada. This happened right after daylight saving time was canceled in Russia. However, this idea was later abandoned for unknown reasons.

The Servant of the People party planned to cancel daylight saving time for the second time in 2021. The bill was passed in the first reading, but no final decision was made.
