The New York Times considers filing a lawsuit against OpenAI
The New York Times may file a lawsuit against OpenAI because the company uses the newspaper’s materials without permission to train artificial intelligence, including ChatGPT.
What is known
According to media reports, the publication has been negotiating with OpenAI for several months to sign a license agreement that would allow the startup to use NYT content to train large-scale language models. However, they turned out to be “tense”: journalists feared that AI would take away their jobs.
It is currently unknown whether OpenAI has actually violated copyright. If confirmed, the company could face a fine of $150,000 for each violation.
OpenAI has often been criticized by other news outlets. CEO of News Corp. Robert Thomson was outraged by the company’s actions at a media conference in May 2023.
“[AI] is designed in such a way that the reader will never visit a news site, which undermines the profession of journalism,” he said.
