The project to develop Ukrainian self-propelled mortar “Smereka” is frozen
“Ukrainian Armor has suspended the project to develop the Ukrainian self-propelled mortar Smereka. This became known from the head of the company Vladislav Belbas.
A prototype of the Smereka mobile mortar created on the basis of VARTA was presented by Ukrainian Armor in 2020. After the invasion began, nothing was reported about the project.
In this regard, Belbas noted that the tests of the mortar had not been completed before the war. The project was frozen by the company until better times. The realities of the Russian-Ukrainian war have shown that it is more expedient to have 20-30 traditional mortars than one mobile mortar. This is due to the fact that the fighting is of a positional nature. The top manager was unable to give a timeline for the project’s resumption. Obviously, Ukrainian Armor will not return to it soon.
