The Russian Federation decided to get rid of the world’s largest nuclear submarine

Russia has decided to withdraw the world’s largest nuclear submarine ‘Dmitry Donskoy’ from its navy. This is reported by the Russian publication ‘RIA Novosti’ with reference to its own sources in the defense-industrial complex.

Previously, the Russians planned to withdraw this submarine from the Russian Navy in 2020, but, apparently, they later decided to postpone this date for another two years. The nuclear submarine ‘Dmytry Donskoy’ was launched in 1980. In 2002, this submarine was modernized and re-armed with the Bulava ballistic missile for its tests before being put into service.

In addition, it was planned that the nuclear-powered submarine ‘Dmytry Donskoy’ will be retrofitted with 200 ‘Caliber’ cruise missiles. It is noted that the name ‘Dmytry Donskoy’ has already been assigned to another strategic nuclear submarine of the Borey-A class, which was laid down last year.
