The Russian ‘SberBank’ began to ‘peel out’ chips from inactive cards in order to issue new ones

Olga Maklashyna, its executive director and head of the cyber security department, spoke at the Paymentsecurity online conference about the “genius” method of extracting chips for new cards, which was found in the Russian “SberBank”.

“Chips have become scarce, they have become expensive, accordingly, our colleagues from the emission center came up with a solution that is close to genius – reimplantation of bank card chips. That is, we began to punch out chips from cards and insert them into new cards,” she shared.

The shortage of chips for cards arose after the withdrawal of Visa and Mastercard from Russia, when customers “massively began to order Mir” cards. Only non-activated cards are used for “reimplantation”. For example, those that users ordered in the application or reissued after the expiration date, but did not pick up, the representative of “SberBank” explained.

The cards are accumulated in the department, after which the collectors take them to the emission centers, where all data is removed from the magnetic strip and chip. Then the cards are taken to the bank card manufacturer, where the chips are removed and inserted into new cards.
