The Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive AIM-7 missiles from the Pentagon for the first time

The day before, official Washington disclosed the contents of the next package of defense support worth USD 300 million. It is aimed at strengthening the air defense system. In addition to ammunition for the Patriot system, the package included anti-tank weapons, artillery shells and ammunition.

According to the information released by the Defense Ministry, the new package includes the following types of weapons:

  • Missiles for Patriot.
  • Stinger missiles.
  • Zuna missiles.
  • Missile shells for HIMARS.
  • Avenger air defense system.
  • 105-mm and 155-mm ammunition.
  • Aviation ammunition.
  • Means for demining.
  • AT-4 grenade launchers.
  • Night vision devices.
  • More than 30 million rounds of ammunition.
  • Ammunition to overcome obstacles.
  • Various equipment.

It is worth noting that for the first time, the Pentagon included radar-guided AIM-7 missiles in the package. Their purpose is not known for certain. The fact is that the Ukrainian Armed Forces do not have any aircraft capable of firing the AIM-7 Sparrow. It will not be possible to adapt them to Ukrainian fighters and attack aircraft by analogy with HARM and Storm Shadow. When launched, these missiles interact with the aircraft’s onboard electronic equipment.

Ukraine received one battery of such systems from Spain. The RIM-7 missile is an AIM-7 adapted for launching from the ground.
