The United States has banned NVIDIA from selling A800 and H800 chips to China, which were created to circumvent export restrictions

The US government has imposed new restrictions on the export of high-tech chips to China. A800 and H800 computing accelerators were banned.

What is known

In the fall of 2022, the United States banned the export of chips with a certain data rate to China. The restrictions affected the A100 and H100 computing accelerators. To solve the problem, NVIDIA has created simplified versions of them – A800 and H800, respectively.

According to Bloomberg, the new export control rules now affect A800 and H800 chips. When exporting computing accelerators with a lower level of performance, companies must declare deliveries. It will take 25 days to review the notification. Based on its results, a decision will be made on the need to obtain an export license.

The expansion of export restrictions is due to the fact that Chinese companies can achieve the desired level of performance by using a large number of less productive chips. U.S. officials believe that this would pose a threat to U.S. national security.
